Golden Eagles Win Again For A Tournament Sweep

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team was up to the task Saturday and completed an unbeaten performance at the Alaska Nanook Classic hosted by Alaska Fairbanks.

The Golden Eagles, who opened the day with a five-set win over Drury, upended previously unbeaten Colorado State Pueblo, 25-20, 25-17, 17-25, 25-14 to wrap up a 4-0 tournament record. Cal State LA (5-3) beat Alaska Fairbanks, Alaska Anchorage, Drury and Colorado State Pueblo in the tournament.

It was a big step forward for the Golden Eagles, who went 1-3 in a season-opening tournament at Point Loma, all of those matches being decided in five sets.

Karla Santos was named the tournament Most Valuable Player, while Emily Elliott joined Santos on the All-Tournament team.

Santos led the Golden Eagles with 19 kills and 19 digs in the win over Colorado State Pueblo, while Alejandra Negron had her best match of the season with 15 kills.

Kasey Jahnke had 10 kills for Colorado State Pueblo (6-1).

Eliza Cannon had seven kills and 28 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while Jaden Grova had 15 set assists and two aces. Haley Roundtree had six kills.

The Golden Eagles, who recorded an impressive five-set win over Drury earlier in the day behind 30 kills from Emily Elliott, started quickly in their second match of the day and never looked back. An early ace by Allison Linder staked the Golden Eagles to an 11-4 lead and they never led by less than four points for the remainder of the set. Negron closed it out with a kill.

The Golden Eagles finished the second set strongly, scoring the final five points to secure the win. A service error started the run, back-to-back kills by Negron, a kill by Roundtree and another kill by Negron gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.

After dropping the third set, Cal State LA took complete control in the fourth set. Back-to-back kills by Roundtree broke a 5-5 tie and the Golden Eagles never looked back. Cal State LA used a 6-0 run to extend a 13-11 lead to a 19-11 advantage. Ayjah Landers recorded consecutive kills to start the run and then combined with Roundtree for a block. Two kills by Cannon continued the run and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the eight-point lead. A block by Cannon and Victoria Duarte ended the match.

Cal State LA will open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday with a home match against Humboldt State.
