LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team made sure its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener was a successful one.
The Golden Eagles recovered from a second-set stumble and went on to beat Humboldt State, 25-18, 24-26, 25-19, 25-15 in a fan-less University Gym. Cal State LA (6-3, 1-0) won its fifth straight match, while Humboldt State (2-3, 0-1 CCAA) slipped below .500.
Karla Santos had 16 kills and 12 digs to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Emily Elliott had 14 kills and eight digs.
Alejandra Negron added 13 kills and and three blocks.
Lindsey McLaughlin had 13 kills for Humboldt State, while Lenox Loving added nine kills.
Daisy Crenshaw had six kills and four blocks,
Eliza Cannon had 36 set assists and six kills and
Jeshmarie Suarez had 37 digs and 12 assists.
Cal State LA had a 60-38 advantage in kills and hit at a .247 percentage to .119 for the 'Jacks. Both teams had six blocks. Cal State LA had nine service aces to four for Humboldt State.
The first set was tied at 12-12 before the Golden Eagles scored four straight points to take the lead for good. A kill by Santos, a block by Crenshaw, another kill by Santos and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 16-12 lead. The Golden Eagles got to set point at 24-17 after an ace by
Jaden Grova and closed out the set on a Humboldt State service error.
Humboldt State used a pair of aces from Loving to open up a 19-15 lead in the second set before the Golden Eagles evened things up after a kill by
Talia Niu. The Golden Eagles staved off a set point on a kill by Santos, but a kill by McLaughlin and a ball-handling error evened the match.
Cal State LA regrouped and took a quick 5-0 lead in the third set behind the serving of Santos. The Golden Eagles took a 10-5 lead after a kill by Negron, but the 'Jacks rallied and closed to within 16-15 before some outstanding serving from Elliott sparked a 7-0 run. Negron started the run with a kill, Elliott delivered a service ace, Cannon had back-to-back kills, Negron had another kill and a block by Negron and
Shelby Grubbs made it 23-15. A kill by Negron gave the Golden Eagles a set point and Negron finished the set with an ace.
Cal State LA jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the final set after an ace by Negron and the Golden Eagles maintained a safe advantage the rest of the way. A kill by Negron got the Golden Eagles out to a 23-15 lead and back-to-back kills by Santos ultimately ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Sonoma State at 2 p.m. Fans are not permitted currently at Cal State LA sporting events.
