LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team completed a successful first weekend of California Collegiate Athletic Association play with an impressive sweep over a perennial conference contender.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and never let up in a 25-21, 25-18, 25-17 win over Sonoma State Saturday afternoon in University Gym. Cal State LA (7-3, 2-0 CCAA) won its sixth straight match.
Emily Elliott and
Karla Santos had 10 kills each for the Golden Eagles, while
Alejandra Negron added nine. Cal State LA had a 46-28 edge in kills and hit at a .296 percentage to .152 for Sonoma State.
Kiana Richardson had seven kills for the Seawolves (4-4, 1-1 CCAA).
Eliza Cannon had 35 set assists, three service aces and three kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had 13 digs and three assists.
Daisy Crenshaw had six kills and one blocks, while
Shelby Grubbs had three blocks and two kills.
The Golden Eagles rallied from a 19-17 deficit to take a contested first set. A kill by Negron and an ace by Negron tied the set at 19-19 and
Ayjah Landers then subbed in to serve and also had an ace to give the Golden Eagles the lead. Santos delivered a kill by a 21-19 lead and the Golden Eagles led the rest of the way. Kills by Santos and Elliott and an attack error got the Golden Eagles to set point and a kill by Cannon ended the set.
Cal State LA trailed early in the second set, 9-8, but scored five straight points to take the lead for good. A kill by Crenshaw tied it and an ace by
Allison Linder put the Golden Eagles ahead. An attack error and two kills by Santos gave Cal State LA a 13-9 lead.
Sonoma State was able to cut the margin to two points twice, but Cal State LA responded each time. A kill by Santos and block by Grubbs ended the set.
The third set was tied at 9-9 before the Golden Eagles went on a 6-0 run to take control. A service error was followed by an attack error, a kill by Negron, a block by Negron and Crenshaw and kills by Negron and Elliott to make it 15-9.
Sonoma State battled back to within one point at 16-15 and still trailed by only two points, 18-16, before the Golden Eagles went on another run to stretch the lead to 22-16. A kill by Landers, an attack error, a block by Grubbs and Landers and a kill by Landers opened up a six-point edge for the Golden Eagles.
After a Cal State LA service error ended the run, the Golden Eagles got kills from Cannon, Elliott and Landers to close out the match.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a conference match at Cal State Monterey Bay.
