LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team battled brilliantly with Azusa Pacific Friday night in an entertaining clash of titans that ended in a scoreless draw.
The Golden Eagles (0-1-1) went into double overtime for the second straight game and this time came away with a well-deserved draw with the Cougars (2-0-1), who entered the match riding a 32-match regular-season winning streak.Â
Cal State LA received a big performance from
Carl Solli, who was limited to just five minutes in the season opener last Sunday against Simon Fraser, but came back to nearly close the show in the second overtime. He had a tremendous bid that was just punched over the crossbar by Azusa Pacific goalkeeper Brendan Fix in the second overtime. Solli also had some high-quality play in the first half when he was the most noticable player on the field.
The Golden Eagles also received a spectacular game from goalkeeper
Alvaro Unanua, who made several key stops, including a sensational diving save to deny Azusa Pacific's Fritz Oestreicher in the 72nd minute.
Both teams played outstanding defense as the 0-0 score would indicate. The Golden Eagles entered the game short-handed defensively, but
Gonzalo Talavera,
Jorge Orellana,
Jose Orellana and
Carl Olsen did yeoman's work to keep the high-powered Azusa Pacific offense off the board.
It was a fitting result for the top two programs in the West Region in 2019 who seemed destined to meet in the Super Region 4 playoffs before Azusa Pacific was upset in a second-round home match. Cal State LA went on to win the Super Region and advance all the way to the national championship game.
The two programs last met in 2018 when the Cougars edged the Golden Eagles, 1-0, in overtime in an NCAA Division II playoff game in Azusa. Previously, Cal State LA had ousted the host Cougars in the 2014 NCAA playoffs, 1-0, on its way to a West Region title.
Azusa Pacific had a 16-8 advantage in shots, including a 7-1 edge in the second half. Cal State LA started the game well, but Azusa Pacific did seem to gain an edge in possession in the second half. The Cal State LA defense, though, stayed strong and Unanua never wavered during some stressful moments.
Both teams hollered for penalty kicks via handballs in the box, Cal State LA in the first half and Azusa Pacific during a flurry in the second half, but those calls went unanswered.
The play evened out in two entertaining overtime periods with both teams threatening for a golden goal.
Unanua had six saves for the Golden Eagles, while Fix had two for the Cougars. Solli and
Carlos Rincon had two shots each for the Golden Eagles, while Gregoire Diep had four for the Cougars.
Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at Concordia on Wednesday in Irvine. Â
