IRVINE -- A tie-breaking goal late in the first half and an insurance goal in the opening minute of the second half added up to a big road victory for Cal State LA's men's soccer team Wednesday night.
The Golden Eagles got goals from
Anton Olofsson and
Lucas Rosales and three saves from
Alvaro Unanua to beat Concordia, 2-0, at Eagles Field. Cal State LA (1-1-1) recorded its second straight shutout, while Concordia (1-2-1) played its fourth straight game against California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents. The Eagles beat Cal Poly Pomona, tied Cal State San Bernardino and lost to Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Cal State LA and Concordia both ended up with nine shots in the contest, while Concordia had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the 44th minute on a goal by Olofsson. He received a nice pass from
Carlos Rincon and got behind the Concordia defense before slotting the ball just past Concordia goalkeeper Andre Flores and just inside the far post.
Cal State LA made it 2-0 shortly after the second half started.
David Elizaga fired a hard shot that was saved by Flores, but Rosales one-timed the rebound into the net to complete a bang-bang play.
The Golden Eagle defense took it from there. Unanua made a nice save on a point-blank header by Concordia's Luke Ryan in the 64th minute and he snuffed out Concordia's last shot on goal in the 82nd minute. The Golden Eagles also had a team save to keep the game at 0-0 in the first half.
Elizaga and Rosales had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Biola at 7 p.m.
