LA MIRADA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team struck quickly and then turned in another defensive gem to post an important non-conference victory.
Goals by
Anton Olofsson and
David Elizaga in the first 16 minutes staked the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 lead and the defense and goalkeeper
Alvaro Unanua made it stand up in a shutout win at Biola. Cal State LA (2-1-1) recorded its third straight shutout and second straight victory. Biola (3-2) played its fifth straight game against a California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent. The Eagles have wins over Cal State San Marcos, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona and losses to Cal State LA and Cal State San Bernardino.
Cal State LA scored two goals on its three first-half shots. The Golden Eagles wound up with eight shots in the game and really clamped things down after taking the 2-0 lead. Biola finished with nine shots, including a missed penalty kick.
Unanua made four saves to post his third shutout of the season.
Olofsson made an alert play to open the scoring in the 10th minute. Oloffson pounced on a misplay by Biola's starting goalkeeper and quickly shot it into an open net for his second goal of the season.
He also was a major contributing factor in Cal State LA's second goal. The Golden Eagles did a masterful job of maintaining possession in Biola's zone and a deft back-heel pass from Olofsson found a streaking Elizaga, who fired a shot to the far post for his first goal of the season.Â
Elizaga, one of two returning All-Americans for the Golden Eagles, also had a pair of booming long-distance attempts in the second half for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday with a non-conference game against CCAA foe Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona.
