POMONA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team concluded its non-conference schedule with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to California Collegiate Athletic Association foe Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles (2-2-1) had a two-game winning streak and a three-game unbeaten string snapped by the Broncos (3-2-1) in a matchup between 2021 CCAA travel partners at Kellogg Stadium. The game on Saturday was a non-conference contest with the two teams scheduled to conclude the regular season with a conference meeting in Los Angeles in November.
Cal State LA found its stride in the second half after being outshot in the opening 45 minutes. The Golden Eagles had a 6-3 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks in the second half, but were unable to net the equalizer.
Cal Poly Pomona had a 10-8 advantage in shots for the game, while Cal State LA had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Paul Henschke scored the only goal of the game in the 11th minute and the Broncos were able to keep the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
David Elizaga and
Eddie Leon had the shots on goal for the Golden Eagles, while
Alvaro Unanua made a pair of saves in goal. Jordan Aldana had two saves for the Broncos.
Anton Olofsson and Leon accounted for Cal State LA's first-half attempts, but both shots were blocked.
Leon had a shot saved in the second half and Elizaga's bid for a tying goal in the final minutes was also saved.
Cal State LA will open CCAA action next Friday at San Francisco State.
