SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team came up with some huge plays Friday to erase an early deficit and post an impressive win over San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles got a momentum-swinging save from
Alvaro Unanua and goals from
Jeppe Paulsen,
Jose Orellana and
David Elizaga to post a 3-1 victory over the Gators at Cox Stadium. Cal State LA (3-2-1, 1-0 CCAA) fell behind in the 14th minute, tied it by halftime and then got second-half goals from Orellana and Elizaga to complete the win.
Cal State LA had a 15-8 advantage in shots, including a 10-4 edge in the second half. Cal State LA also had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks with all six coming in the second half.
Unanua made three saves, including a huge stop on a penalty kick that kept the deficit at 1-0 in the 38th minute. Less than a minute later, Paulsen scored to tie it and the Golden Eagles put together a strong second-half to secure the win.
Denis Vezina gave the Gators (4-4, 0-1 CCAA) a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the 14th minute and the Gators appeared poised to take a 2-0 lead before Unanua made a spectacular save to deny a penalty kick try by Gustavo Ferrari.
Less than a minute later, Paulsen scored his first goal of the season to tie the game heading into halftime.
Orellana gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead in the 50th minute with an assist from Aiden Wait. It was Orellana's first career goal for Cal State LA.
Elizaga finished the scoring for Cal State LA in the final minute when he scored his second goal of the season with an assist from
Simon Johansen.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a road match at Sonoma State.
