Chris Chamides Accepts Coaching Position At LMU

LOS ANGELES -- Chris Chamides, who holds the program record for wins in both men's and women's soccer at Cal State LA, has been named the new women's soccer head coach at NCAA Division I Loyola Marymount, the school announced on Wednesday.

Chamides, who guided the Golden Eagles to the men's soccer program's first-ever NCAA championship earlier this month, had a legendary coaching career at Cal State LA that included tremendous success with both soccer teams. Chamides arrived at Cal State LA in 2003 and brought both programs to national prominence. He had an overall record of 232-90-53 in 18 years as the men's soccer head coach and a 103-69-25 in 10 seasons as the women's coach.

"I would like to thank everyone who has supported us through the years, but especially the student-athletes and assistant coaches who helped me build the program," Chamides said. "The sacrifices we all made were well worth it. I am leaving grateful and content that I put in a good shift that created many good memories for a lot of good people."

Michael Erush, the program's top assistant coach, will become the interim head coach.

"Chris has meant so much to this program as he built it into a consistent powerhouse and was constantly competing for national championships," Cal State LA executive director of intercollegiate athletics Dr. Daryl Gross said. "His student athletes earned some of the highest honors on the field and in the classroom. He has made Cal State LA men's soccer elite and has established a tradition of excellence for the program. Chris is a future Golden Eagle Hall of Famer and will always be recognized as one of our greatest coaches. We wish he, Nancy, and his family the best in his new journey."

Chamides had great success during his tenure with both progams. For the men, his players earned 92 All-Conference, 55 All-Region, 21 All-America, 2 National Players of the Year, 1 West Region Player of the Year, 7 CCAA Players of the Year, 3 CCAA Freshman of the Year, 3 CCAA Champion-Scholar and 5 CoSIDA Academic All-America Awards. For the women, his players earned 43 All-CCAA, 21 All-West Region, 4 All-America, 3 CCAA Player of the Year and 1 West Region Player of the Year awards. Combined, his players earned 135 All-CCAA, 76 All-Region, 25 All-America, 2 National Player of the Year, and 2 West Region Player of the Year awards.

The pinnacle, of course, came with the 2021 national championship that came on the heels of a national title game appearance in 2019. Cal State LA won all available championships in 2021 - the CCAA regular-season, CCAA Tournament, Super Region 4 and NCAA Division II championships. In his last two seasons, Chamides led the Golden Eagles to a combined record of 37-3-6 record with back-to-back CCAA and Super Region 4 titles and one national championship.

Chamides was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the seventh time in 2021 and he and his assistant coaches were named the 2021 National Coaching Staff of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches.

"We have accomplished quite a lot here on and off the field and I am looking forward to a new chapter in my life," Chamides said. "Having said that, I am leaving a special place and there will always be a Golden Eagle in my heart."

Erush, who has been a major part of the program since his arrival from Loyola Marymount in 2018, will now lead the program. After a Hall of Fame playing career with the Lions, Erush served as a valuable member of the coaching staff for 11 seasons, the last four as the program's associate head coach. He began his coaching career in 2007 and was promoted to associate head coach in February of 2014.

While at LMU, he helped organize and coordinate recruits, guided the back line, and handled scheduling, video editing, and opponent scouting. He successfully guided student-athletes both on and off the field. Collectively, the team held over a 3.0 grade point average, had a graduation rate of 96% and qualified for the WCC All-Academic Teams. Erush developed more than 40 players who made it into the professional ranks. He coordinated and ran all training sessions, game plans and scouting reports. He supervised all aspects of a NCAA Division I Program, including budget management, recruitment of players, compliance, eligibility, team practice and game management.

Since Erush joined Cal State LA, the Golden Eagles have a combined record of 52-6-9 over three seasons.

"Michael Erush will carry the torch as our interim head coach," Gross said. "He has been a part of the team that has elevated Cal State LA's men's soccer to elite status. His DNA is etched in the program as we have competed in the national title game in back-to-back seasons. We will lean on his experienced leadership and knowledge as we look to continue to compete at the highest levels."
