Golden Eagles To Host CCAA Tourney With SoCal Powers

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA will be hosting the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer Tournament this weekend and the tourney is all Southern California.

With the No. 1 seeded Golden Eagles leading the way, all four remaining participants are from the South. No. 2 seed Cal Poly Pomona will face No. 3 seed Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at 4 p.m. in the first semi-final and No. 1 Cal State LA will face No. 4 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 7 p.m.

The championship match will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the winner earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

The four top teams in the conference boast a combined overall record of 43-14-9 with all four programs already achieving 10-win seasons.

While Cal State LA and Cal Poly Pomona earned byes into the semi-finals, Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Dominguez Hills were victorious in first-round games on Sunday. The Coyotes got a goal in the final minute of regulation to beat Chico State, 1-0, in San Bernardino, while Cal State Dominguez Hills beat Sonoma State, 2-0, with a pair of late goals in Carson.

Cal State LA will be making its 14th overall appearance in the conference tournament and 10th straight. The Golden Eagles will be seeking their fifth tournament title after previously winning tournaments in 2011, 2013, 2017 and 2018.

Cal Poly Pomona will be seeking its fourth tournament title after previously winning in 2014, 2015 and 2019, while Cal State Dominguez Hills will be seeking its eighth tournament title and first since 2009.

Cal State San Bernardino, which has done a great job of following its outstanding 2019 season that included a trip to the NCAA Super Region 4 championship game, is after its first-ever tournament title.

Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills, which have a lengthy postseason history in the NCAA playoffs, have only met once previously in conference tournament action. The No. 6 seed Golden Eagles tied the No. 1 seed Toros, 1-1, in 2017 before advancing on penalty kicks on their way to the tournament title at UC San Diego.

Cal State LA and Cal Poly Pomona have met in the last three tournament championship matches with Cal State LA winning back-to-back tournament titles in 2017 and 2018 and the two teams tying in 2019, 1-1, before Cal Poly Pomona won the title on penalty kicks.
