CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team used a prolific all-around attack to post a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles were strong out of the gates and never looked back in a 25-13, 25-21, 25-19 victory over the Toros in the Torodome. Cal State LA (11-5, 7-2 CCAA) won its third straight match and remains in second place in the CCAA.
Karla Santos had 11 kills and eight digs in the first two sets to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Eliza Cannon had six kills and 17 set assists.
Emily Elliott also had six kills.
Coco Ikpe and Bailey Fuches had six kills each to lead the Toros (0-14, 1-8 CCAA).
Haley Roundtree had four kills,
Daisy Crenshaw had four kills and two blocks and
Jaden Grova had 12 set assists.Â
Cal State LA had a 42-27 advantage in kills and hit at a .311 percentage to .093 for the Toros. The Golden Eagles also had a 5-3 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had eight aces and 11 errors, while the Toros had three aces and five errors.
The Golden Eagles scored five straight points to take a 7-2 lead early in the opening set and really took command after a 7-0 run later in the frame. A service error, a kill by Roundtree, an ace by Grova and a kill by Cannon made up the first run, while two Elliott kills, two aces by Santos, a Crenshaw kill and two Dominguez Hills errors gave the Golden Eagles a 19-8 lead. Two Santos kills and an attack error ended the set for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but the resilient Toros battled back and built a 19-14 lead. A Roundtree kill, an attack error and a Santos kill brought the Golden Eagles closer at 19-17 and, after trailing 21-19, the Golden Eagles scored the final six points of the set to take a 2-0 lead. A Cannon kill and an attack error tied the set at 21-21 and a Crenshaw block and Crenshaw kill made it 23-21. A kill by Santos and an attack error ended the set.
Cal State LA raced out to a 14-4 lead in the third set after a kill by
Allison Linder, but, once again, the Toros battled back strongly and closed to within 21-19. The Golden Eagles, though, scored the final four points to end the match. A service error started the match-ending run and a block by Linder and
Victoria Duarte, a solo block by Duarte and a kill by
Ayjah Landers completed it.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday night with a home match against Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning at 5 p.m.
