LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team took care of business Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles got solid contributions from all 14 players who saw time on the court in a 25-19, 25-16, 25-15 victory over the Toros in University Gym. Cal State LA (12-5, 8-2 CCAA) won its fourth straight match, including victories over crosstown foe Cal State Dominguez Hills in consecutive nights.
Emily Elliott had a match-high nine kills and three blocks to lead a balanced offensive attack for the Golden Eagles.
Haley Roundtree had an outstanding effort with seven kills and one block in two sets of action.
Renee Wheeler had six kills and one block for the Toros (0-15, 1-9 CCAA).
Jeshmarie Suarez had 11 digs and two service aces for the Golden Eagles, while
Alejandra Negron had five kills and two aces.
Eliza Cannon had 21 set assists and seven digs, while
Karla Santos had three kills, two aces, two blocks and five digs in the first two sets of the match.
The match on Saturday was the first in the second half of the CCAA schedule with the Golden Eagles, in second place in the conference, trying to chase down conference-leading Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles started quickly on Saturday and maintained their focus throughout the match. Back-to-back aces by Negron lifted the Golden Eagles to an early 7-3 lead in the opening set and a pair of kills by Santos opened up a 10-5 lead. The Toros, much like they did on Friday in Carson, battled back and took a 14-12 lead following a kill by Nicole Peery. The set was tied for a final time at 18-18 before the Golden Eagles scored three straight points on a block by Santos and
Daisy Crenshaw, a kill by Crenshaw and an attack error to take the lead for good.Â
Cal State LA scored the final four points to take the set on a kill by Santos, a service ace by Santos, a kill by Negron and another ace by Santos.
The Golden Eagles trailed in the early stages of the second set, but took the lead for good after a service error and a block by Crenshaw and Elliott made it 11-9. The Golden Eagles scored four straight points on kills by Crenshaw, Negron, Elliott and Negron again to open up an 18-11 lead and got to set point after a block by Roundtree and Cannon at 24-13. The Toros fought off three set points before a kill by
Ashley Dittmann ended the frame.
The Golden Eagles trailed as late as 11-10 in the third set before a service error, two straight attack errors, an ace by Suarez and a kill by
Ayjah Landers gave them a 15-11 lead.
Cal State LA got a pair of aces from Landers during a 6-0 run that opened the lead to 22-13, a kill by
Talia Niu made it 23-14 and kills by Elliott accounted for the final two Golden Eagle points of the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal State San Marcos beginning at 5 p.m.
