No. 19 Golden Eagles Pick Up Another Impressive Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA men's soccer team kept its momentum going Sunday and recorded another impressive California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The No. 19 Golden Eagles struck for three first-half goals and let the defense do the rest in a 4-0 victory over Stanislaus State at University Stadium. Cal State LA (6-2-1, 4-0 CCAA) remains in a first-place tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills following the first two weeks of conference play.

Cal State LA stretched its conference winning streak to 10 and its conference unbeaten streak to 18 with the victory.

Jorge Orellana, Morten Bjoershol and Aidan Wait all scored goals in the first half for the Golden Eagles, while Manuel Villena added a second-half goal to complete the scoring.

Alvaro Unanua was outstanding in goal once again for the Golden Eagles and made three saves for his sixth shutout of the season and third in a row.

Cal State LA had a 12-10 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 edge in the first half. The Golden Eagles also had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

After some threatening moments early in the match that didn't result in goals, Cal State LA struck for the first time in the 19th minute. David Elizaga started the scoring play with a beautiful free kick into the box that was headed brilliantly into the goal by Jorge Orellana. It was Elizaga's third assist of the season and 26th of his sensational Cal State LA career. The goal was the first for Orellana, who has been a defensive stalwart during his Cal State LA career.

Elizaga also had a role in the Golden Eagles' second goal when he was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick in the 29th minute. All-American defender Morten Bjoershol converted the penalty try for his second goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.

Wait made it 3-0 with a play that started thanks to the hustle of Daniel Yu, who raced to save the ball before it went beyond the endline. Yu was able to get the ball to Lucas Rosales, who centered it to Wait for his first goal of the season. Wait had an excellent weekend for the Golden Eagles with the goal and a pair of assists in Friday's win over Cal State East Bay.

Manuel Villena scored his first goal of the season with a sliding goal in the 76th minute off a perfectly-placed pass from Orellana.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home match against Cal State San Marcos.
