No. 13 Golden Eagles Post Shutout Win Over Cougars

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team kept its winning ways going on Thursday with a California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State San Marcos.

The No. 13 Golden Eagles got a second-half goal from All-American Morten Bjoershol and goalkeeper Alvaro Unanua and the stingy Cal State LA defense kept the Cougars off the board in a 1-0 victory. Cal State LA (7-2-1, 5-0 CCAA) won its fifth straight game and recorded its fourth straight shutout. The Golden Eagles have only allowed one goal in their first five conference matches.

Cal State LA stretched its conference winning streak to 11 and its conference unbeaten streak to 19 dating back to 2018 with the victory.

The Golden Eagles faced a stern challenge from the Cougars (2-8-1, 1-3-1 CCAA), who kept Cal State LA off the scoresheet until the 66th minute. The scoreless tie ended on Bjoershol's third goal of the season and was set up by a hard-working effort from Carl Solli, who was able to control the ball deep in Cal State San Marcos territory and passed to an on-rushing Bjoershol, who promptly fired the ball into the net.

Bjoershol, the CCAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, now shares the team lead in goals with Anton Olofsson.

Cal State LA had a 14-5 advantage in shots, while the Cougars had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles started to take control of the game in the second half when they had an 8-2 advantage in shots.

David Elizaga had several dangerous chances and led all players with five shots, while Solli, who played a fantastic second half for the Golden Eagles, had three shots.

Unanua had another outstanding game, making two saves and maintaining order around the goal while recording his seventh shutout of the season.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
