Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 13 Golden Eagles Extend Some Impressive Streaks

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team used a spectacular second-half goal from Daniel Yu to keep some impressive streaks going Sunday at Cal State San Bernardino.

Yu unleashed a perfectly-placed shot from a sharp angle for the lone goal in the Golden Eagles' 1-0 win over the Coyotes at Premier Field. Cal State LA (8-2-1, 6-0 CCAA) won its sixth straight game and recorded its fifth straight shutout.

The victory extended Cal State LA's CCAA winning streak to 12 and its conference unbeaten streak to 20. The winning streak began following a 1-1 tie at Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 17, 2019, the lone conference match that didn't end in a victory for the Golden Eagles during their dominant 2019 run to the CCAA regular-season title.

Cal State LA stretched its shutout streak to five games in a row and has allowed only one goal so far in six conference matches. The Golden Eagles maintained their share of first place in the conference with Cal State Dominguez Hills with 18 points, while Cal State San Bernardino (5-4-2, 3-2-1) stays in fourth place with 10 points.

Cal State LA finished the game with a 10-9 advantage in shots and took over the contest in the second half with an 8-3 edge. Both teams had four shots on goal.

Alvaro Unanua was outstanding once again in goal for the Golden Eagles, notching four saves for his eighth shutout of the season.

The only goal of the game was caused by some steady pressure from the Golden Eagles late in the second half. Cal State San Bernardino was hemmed into its own zone and tried twice to clear the ball out of harm's way. The first time, the ball was sent back in by Cal State LA defender Gonzalo Talavera. The second time, it was Diego Vargas who pounced on a loose ball and began the game-winning play. Vargas quickly sent the ball down the right sideline, where Yu ran onto to it and fired a shot from a sharp angle outside the box. The ball nestled into the front of the net, just inside the far post for the winning score in the 78th minute.

It was the second goal of the season for Yu, who has been a big contributor off the bench for the Golden Eagles. He has a pair of goals now on the season and one assist for five points.

Morten Bjoershol, who scored the game-winning goal on Thursday in a 1-0 win over Cal State San Marcos, had a pair of shots on Sunday, including one on goal. Manuel Garcia, Eduardo Castellanos, and, of course, Yu, had the other shots on goal for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a match at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m.
