Golden Eagles Rally For Big Sunday Victory

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's baseball team showed tremendous heart Sunday in its California Collegiate Athletic Association series finale against Stanislaus State and it paid off with a victory.

The Golden Eagles stormed back from an early 7-2 deficit and beat the Warriors, 8-7, at Warrior Baseball Field. Cal State LA (6-14, 5-11 CCAA) took the lead with five runs in the eighth inning, including a go-ahead two-run single from Tyler Odekirk. Fino Amador was outstanding in relief, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing only one hit and no walks. He struck out five and earned his first victory of the season.

Cal State LA earned a series split with Stanislaus State (14-8, 8-8 CCAA).

Odekirk was 3-for-5 with one run scored and three runs batted in to lead a nine-hit offensive attack. Jordan Myrow was 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and Jacob Northup was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Christian Longoria was solid in relief for the Golden Eagles and allowed five hits and two runs over 4 1/3 innings while getting the Golden Eagles into the seventh inning.

Stanislaus State scored five times in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Northup delivered a two-run single in the third to make it 5-2, but the Warriors got those two runs back in the bottom of the the inning to take a 7-2 lead.

Cal State LA scored once in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Odekirk to make it 7-3 and then took the lead with the big eighth-inning rally. Thomas Chavez drew a pinch-hit walk, Gerardo Castaneda was hit by a pitch and Jeff Zordani walked to lead the bases. Chavez scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-4 and a run-scoring single by Myrow made it 7-5.

Nick Atkins then doubled in a run to make it 7-6 and Odekirk put the Golden Eagles ahead, 8-7, with a two-run single.

Amador took it from there and struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth and worked around a leadoff single in the ninth while striking out two more.

Cal State LA will begin a four-game series at home against Chico State on Friday at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field.
