TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's baseball team put an end to its losing streak with an offensive explosion on a long and rainy day at Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles erupted for a season-high 14 runs and 19 hits to take the opener of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader, 14-5, but fell short in the seven-inning nightcap, 7-4, in a game delayed nearly two hours by rain. Cal State LA (5-14, 4-11 CCAA) won its first road game of the season in the opener.
Cal State LA smacked three home runs in the doubleheader, two of them by
Travis Burleson. The other came from
Jordan Myrow.
The Golden Eagles busted out of their recent slump in the opener.
Ryan Lewis was 3-for-4 with three RBI,
Aaron McCann was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI,
Jacob Northup was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Myrow was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Garrett Boyce allowed six hits and two runs over six innings to pick up the win.
Jeff Zordani pitched a scoreless inning of relief and
Andrew Matus gave up a three-run home run in two innings of relief to complete the win.
Burleson hit a two-run home run in the second inning to stake the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles took a 3-1 lead in the third on a double play grounder by
Allen Pacheco that scored
Nick Atkins and then broke the game open with three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and six in the seventh.
Myrow singled in a run and Lewis had a run-scoring single to highlight the three-run fourth inning and two runs scored in the fifth on a fielder's choice by Myrow. Cal State LA scored all six runs with two outs in the seventh. Atkins had a run-scoring single, Lewis had a two-run single, Pacheco had a run-scoring single and McCann had a two-run double.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles got a solo home run from Burleson in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1 and a three-run shot by Myrow in the top of the fourth to tie it at 4-4. Stanislaus State (14-7, 8-7 CCAA), though, got a three-run home run from Jamie Gardner in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead.
After the lengthy rain delay, neither team could generate any more offense.
Micah Hee went three innings for the Golden Eagles after left after facing three batters in the fourth.
Brent Jacques tossed three hitless innings of relief for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will conclude the series on Sunday with a single game beginning at noon.
