LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put forth an outstanding effort Saturday on Senior Day before falling just short against Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles led for the majority of the game, but were outscored 17-10 in the fourth quarter of a hard-fought 56-52 loss to the Broncos in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in University Gym. Cal State LA (10-16, 8-12 CCAA) led by as many as eight points in the third quarter and had a potential game-tying basket in the waning seconds just stay out and Cal Poly Pomona (17-9, 13-7 CCAA) hit two free throws with one second left to account for the final margin.
Nicole Flennaugh had a game-high 15 points for the Golden Eagles, scoring all 15 on five 3-pointers.
Rachael DiRegolo also had a big game with 14 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.
Jackie Ricketson had 13 points for Cal Poly Pomona, while Kasey Smit had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Mackenzie Barnes had eight points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot 42.6 percent for the game (23-of-54) and made 6-of-19 from 3-point range. Cal Poly Pomona shot 34.4 percent for the game (21-of-61) and was 5-of-21 from 3-point range. The difference in the game came at the free-throw line where Cal Poly Pomona was 9-of-15, while Cal State LA, incredibly, did not have an attempt.
Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 38-29, and committed 18 turnovers to 14 for Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles started well and took an 8-1 lead after two 3-pointers by Flennaugh and a basket by DiRegolo. Another 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles an 11-3 lead and a layup by DiRegolo gave the Golden Eagles a 13-8 lead after one quarter.
A basket by
Alyssa Fisher gave the Golden Eagles a 28-23 lead late in the second quarter and Cal State LA settled for a 28-26 halftime lead.
Three-pointers by Fisher and Flennaugh boosted the lead to 34-26 early in the third quarter and a basket by Barnes gave the Golden Eagles a 38-30 lead. After Cal Poly Pomona scored nine straight points to take a brief lead, basket by Barnes and DiRegolo gave the Golden Eagles a 42-39 lead entering the fourth quarter.
A basket by DiRegolo gave the Golden Eagles a 44-39 edge, but the Broncos scored the next nine points to take the lead. Cal State LA got to within 50-48 after a layup by Bordonaro and trailed by just two points, 52-50, after a basket by Barnes with 1:07 to go. Barnes scored again to make it 54-52 and, after a pair of missed free throws, Fisher made a nice drive into the lane, but the ball just wouldn't fall and the Broncos prevailed after hitting two more free throws with one second left.
