LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team fell in a hard-fought battle Wednesday against Azusa Pacific.
The Golden Eagles lost the doubles point and managed a pair of wins in singles to fall to the Cougars, 5-2, at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. The match of the day came at No. 6 singles, where Cal State LA's
Mariko Sagara fell in a marathon three-set match to Azusa Pacific's Audrey Stewart, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Cal State LA picked up singles wins from
Noa Davico and
Berta Acero. Davico beat Anna Savchenko, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, while Acero won a second-set tiebreaker to post a 6-1, 7-6 win over Katia Betancourt at No. 5 singles.
Amanda Schneider fell at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, to Azusa Pacific's Petra Ivankovic,
Chelsey Ruiz fell at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1, to Jacky Wagner and
Sakura Kurokawa fell at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-4, to Azusa Pacific's April Wong.
Cal State LA fell at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to lose the doubles points. Schneider and Ruiz held a 4-3 lead at No. 1 doubles when the doubles point was clinched so their match went unfinished.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Biola.
