POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team was unable to carry over any momentum from its breakthrough victory last week over Chico State.
The Golden Eagles ran up against a stout Cal Poly Pomona defense and fell to the Broncos, 71-49, Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (5-10, 3-6 CCAA) shot just 28.6 percent for the game and fell behind after a tough second quarter that yielded only five points. Cal Poly Pomona (10-5, 6-3 CCAA) led by only two points after one quarter, but took control after a 15-5 advantage in the second period.
Alyssa Fisher had 14 points, four rebounds and three steals for the Golden Eagles, while
Sydney Bordonaro had 13 points and six rebounds.
Kasey Smits had a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double for the Broncos.
Yesenia Smith had six points off the bench for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA was just 17-of-60 overall (28.3 percent) and made just 4-of-20 from 3-point range. Cal Poly Pomona was 31-of-70 (44.3 percent) and just 4-of-12 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 11-of-14 from the free-throw line, while Cal Poly Pomona was 5-of-6. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 49-35.Â
The Golden Eagles had a good start and took a 10-7 lead after five consecutive points by Fisher, including a 3-pointer. A pair of free throws by
Jo Ana Adams gave the Golden Eagles a 12-9 lead, but the Broncos went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. A 3-pointer by Bordonaro and a basket by
Rachael DiRegolo pulled the Golden Eagles to within 19-17 after one period.
Cal State LA then made only two baskets in the second period and Cal Poly Pomona took command. Smith scored on a layup with 2:46 remaining in the half for the Golden Eagles' first points of the quarter.
Two free throws by Adams to open the third quarter made it 34-24, but the Golden Eagles never got closer than that.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game against Cal State San Bernardino at 1 p.m.Â
