ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team has seen this ending far too many times this season.

The Golden Eagles fell just short against No. 33 Sonoma State on Sunday, falling by a 4-3 count at the SSU Tennis Courts. Cal State LA (6-8) has now lost six matches by either a 4-3 or 5-4 count this season.

Cal State LA started well on Sunday and swept the three doubles contests. Under the new NCAA Division II scoring format, though, that is worth only one point. So, instead of leading 3-0, the Golden Eagles carried a 1-0 lead into the six singles matches. Cal State LA then got wins from Luciana Di Laura at No. 2 singles and Chelsey Ruiz at No. 5 singles, while Sonoma State (10-6) won the other four to take the match.

The Golden Eagles turned in one of their best doubles perfomances of the season. Isabella Lopez and Amanda Schneider beat Jensyn Warren and Carolyn Brooner at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, Berta Acero Garcia and Ruiz beat Jenna DeTurk and Hannah Highsmith, 7-6, at No. 2 doubles and Mariko Sagara and Di Laura beat Clarissa Colling and Carolina Alfonsin, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles.

Di Laura posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Colling and Ruiz pulled out a three-set victory over Alfonsin at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 for the lone Golden Eagles points in singles play.

Cal State LA will play its final home match of the season on Wednesday against Azusa Pacific. The Golden Eagles will honor seniors Isabella Lopez and Luciana Di Laura in pre-match ceremonies beginning at 1 p.m. Pizza will be served for fans in head coach Sandy Kriezel's final home match of her legendary coaching career. Kriezel will be retiring after 25 years of coaching at the end of the season.
