LOS ANGELES -- It was a day of celebration for Cal State LA's women's tennis team as they bid farewell to seniors
Isabella Lopez and
Luciana Di Laura and retiring head coach
Sandy Kriezel in pre-match ceremonies.
The match didn't go as they had hoped - visiting Azusa Pacific captured most of the tight points and went on to a 6-1 victory - but a large group of Cal State LA student-athletes, coaches, staff and former players and colleagues of Kriezel -- came out on the main court to witness an emotional send-off.
Kriezel, who is retiring after 25 years of coaching, gave a nice send-off to Di Laura, a three-year player for the Golden Eagles, and Lopez, who is wrapping up a four-year career at Cal State LA. Then, assistant
Richard Gallien made an emotional tribute to Kriezel before the head coach invited all in attendance to join in for a pre-match cheer of "LA!."
There were lots of flowers and signs and a few tears and a fitting tribute to three very special Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA (6-9), which had swept its three doubles contests at Sonoma State in its last match, fell in all three doubles sets on Wednesday to Azusa Pacific (11-7).
In singles, three of the contests went to three sets with Cal State LA picking up its lone point at No. 2 singles, where Di Laura won a third-set tiebreaker to outlast Anna Savchenko, 6-7, 6-3, 10-7. Lopez, the Golden Eagles' only other senior, also had a three-set contest that went to Azusa Pacific's Kara Hinton, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
Berta Acero Garcia fell in a third-set tiebreaker to Jacky Wagner at No. 4 singles, 7-6, 2-6, 10-3.
Cal State LA will conclude its regular season on Saturday at UC San Diego before opening play in the PacWest Championships next week.
