SURPRISE, ARIZ. -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team took a good first step in the PacWest Conference Championships on Wednesday morning.
The Golden Eagles took the doubles point and then quickly locked up three singles points to earn a 4-0 victory over Holy Names at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center. No. 7 Cal State LA (7-10) will advance to face No. 2 Hawaii Pacific in a quarterfinal match on Friday.
The Golden Eagles were strong in doubles and set the tone for the match.
Amanda Schneider and
Isabella Lopez won at No. 1 doubles, Jahan Bayramova and Dominique Ernst, 6-2, while
Luciana Di Laura and
Mariko Sagara won at No. 3 doubles, 6-0, over Macy Barajas and Anna Hoerter.
Berta Acero Garcia and
Chelsey Ruiz led at No. 2 doubles, 5-1, when the match was stopped because the doubles point was clinched.
The Golden Eagles then took the first three singles matches off the court to wrap up the match. Ruiz beat Eilis Work, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, Sagara beat Hoerter, 6-0, at No. 6 singles and Lopez beat Barajas, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles to finish the contest.
Schneider led at No. 1 singles, 6-5, Di Laura led at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 3-0 and Acero Garcia led at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 5-0 when the match was concluded.
Holy Names, the No. 10 seed, ends its season at 8-13.
Cal State LA will now face Hawaii Pacific in a quarterfinal match scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
