SAN DIEGO -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team was on the short end of yet another disappointing 4-3 decision Saturday at Point Loma.
The Golden Eagles lost the doubles point in heartbreaking fashion and then went on to win three of the six singles matches in a 4-3 loss to the Sea Lions. This is the second time this season Cal State LA has fallen to Point Loma by a 4-3 count. In the first meeting, the Golden Eagles (6-7) won the doubles point and lost four of the six singles, all in straight sets.
Cal State LA has now lost five matches this season by a 4-3 count and are 2-5 overall in matches decided by one point.
On Saturday, the Golden Eagles got singles wins from
Luciana Di Laura at No. 2 singles in straight sets over Gabi Armas, 7-6, 6-4,
Isabella Lopez in a three-set thriller over Ellie Gamble at No. 3 singles, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, and
Chelsey Ruiz in a straight sets win over Michelle Torres at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
Point Loma (9-4) won the other three singles matches, including a pair of three-set battles that could have gone either way. Cal State LA's
Mariko Sagara lost a hard-fought, three-set match at No. 6 singles to Nicole Camaratta, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and the Golden Eagles' Berta Acero Garcia fell in the closest match of the day, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 4 singles, to Taylor McGowan.
In doubles, Di Laura and Sagara won at No. 3 doubles over McGowan and Camaratta, 6-2, but Acero Garcia and Ruiz fell at No. 2 doubles to Shelby Groeneveld and Torres, 6-2, and Lopez and
Amanda Schneider fell to Gamble and Armas at No. 1 doubles, 7-6.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at Dominican.
