LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had an explosive offensive performance Saturday in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles knocked down a school record-tying 21 shots from 3-point range and went on to a 93-71 victory over the Otters in University Gym. Cal State LA (13-10, 9-8 CCAA) remain 1 1/2 games out of fourth place in a tightly-packed CCAA race. The 21 successful 3-pointers ties the program record set last season against Bethesda and is the most Cal State LA has ever made against a CCAA opponent.
Fard Muhammad led the Golden Eagles with 23 points, including a 7-of-14 performance from 3-point range.
Jordan Rogers had another strong game with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists and
Kenneth Cyprian had 11 points and three steals.
Koen Sapwell had 17 points and five assists to lead four players in double figures for the Otters (2-20, 2-15 CCAA).
Anthony Fitzpatrick and
Devin Means had nine points each for the Golden Eagles, while
Ja'Sean Lewis had eight points, nine rebounds, six assists and three blocks and
Shacquille Dawkins had eight points, four rebounds and five assists.
Cal State LA shot 45.7 percent overall (32-of-70) and shot even better from 3-point range, making 21-of-45 for 46.7 percent. The Otters shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65)Â overall and were 10-of-29 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 8-of-11 from the free-throw line, while Cal State Monterey Bay was 7-of-9. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 44-36, but forced 20 turnovers while committing only 12.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as five points in the first half, 29-24, but closed the period with a 24-7 run to take a 48-36 halftime lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Dawkins and Cyprian, a three-point play by Fitzpatrick and a layup by Muhammad sparked an 11-0 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 37-31 edge and a tip-in by Lewis right before the buzzer gave the Golden Eagles their 12-point halftime lead.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Muhammad and Dawkins and a free throw by
Brandon Hitchman gave the Golden Eagles a 58-41 lead early in the second half and they led by at least eight points the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by Serene Athj gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 90-67, with 2:12 to go.
Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at Cal State San Marcos on Thursday.
