LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team had its chances against Point Loma Thursday afternoon, but the Golden Eagles came up just short.
The Golden Eagles took the doubles point after winning two of the three contests, but could manage only two wins in singles and fell to the Sea Lions, 4-3, at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex.
Cal State LA (1-1) has had a series of tight matches against Point Loma (1-1) and Thursday was no different.
The Golden Eagles got off to a good start when the No. 2 doubles team of
Amanda Schneider and
Chelsey Ruiz posted a 6-0 win over Point Loma's Shelby Groeneveld and Michelle Torres and the No. 3 team of
Berta Acero Garcia and
Mariko Sagara rallied for a 7-5 victory over Taylor McGowan and Nicole Camaratta. The No. 1 doubles team of
Isabella Lopez and
Luciana Di Laura fell by a 7-6 score to Point Loma's Ellie Gamble and Gabi Armas.
In the best singles match of the contest, Lopez rallied from one set down to beat McGowan, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Ruiz beat Torres at No. 5 singles for the only singles victories for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action next Thursday at Azusa Pacific.
