LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team put up quite a battle Sunday against No. 5 Academy of Art.
The Golden Eagles fell to the region's No. 1 team, 6-1, but a number of matches went down to the wire with Cal State LA coming out on the short end.
Cal State LA slipped to 3-2 overall, while Academy of Art improved to 3-0.
Isabella Lopez had the best result for the Golden Eagles with a 7-5, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles over Sofia Ragona. That was the lone point for Cal State LA, which is ranked eighth in the region .
Cal State LA battled tough in all three doubles matches before Academy of Art secured the point. Lopez and
Luciana Di Laura fell at No. 1 doubles, 6-2,
Amanda Schneider and
Chelsey Ruiz fell in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (7-3) and
Berta Acero Garcia and
Mariko Sagara fell at No. 3 doubles, 7-5.
Acero Garcia at No. 3 singles, Ruiz at No. 5 singles and Sagara at No. 6 singles, all lost in three-set battles. Acero Garcia lost to No. 34 Alma Thell-Lenntorp, 6-2, 0-6, 6-1, Ruiz fell to Paula Alcantara, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 and Sagara fell to Taisiia Andrieieva, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday with a home match against Concordia-Irvine at 1:30 p.m.
