SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's baseball team had a late rally come up short Friday in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles struck for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull to within one run, but that was as close as they could get in an 11-6 loss to the Otters at the Otter Sports Complex. Cal State LA (2-6, 1-3 CCAA) had 10 hits, including a three-run home run from
Spencer Sundahl.
Sundahl was 2-for-5 with three RBI, while
Tyler Odekirk was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Adam Gordon went 2-for-3 with one run scored and a pair of walk and
Nate Alam went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Saxon Andross started for the Golden Eagles and went 5 1/3 innings. He gave up nine hits and six runs while waking two and striking out four.
Jackson Bond went the next 1 2/3 innings and gave up two hits and one run and
Angel Lerma finished up and pitched one inning for the Golden Eagles.
Brian Morley went 4-for-5 with five RBI for Cal State Monterey Bay (5-6, 3-2 CCAA). Daniel Harris worked 6 2/3 innings and allowed eight hits and one earned run to pick up the win.
Cal State LA trailed 4-0 after two innings, but Andross then settled in and gave the Golden Eagles a chance to rally. Odekirk scored on a double play grounder by Sundahl to score the Golden Eagles' first run in the sixth.
The Otters, though, responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-1 lead.
Cal State LA then scored five times in the seventh to close to within one.
Nic Sandoval's RBI groundout drove in
Jordan Myrow with the first run and Odekirk's line drive sacrifice fly made it 7-3. Sundahl then belted a three-run home run to get the Golden Eagles to within one run.
Cal State LA will continue its series at Cal State Monterey Bay with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
