Golden Eagles Light It Up For First CCAA Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had a night to remember Thursday while picking up its first California Collegiate Athletic Association win of the season.

The Golden Eagles exploded for a season-high 92 points in a 92-65 victory over San Francisco State in University Gym. Cal State LA (3-6, 1-3 CCAA) scored 62 points in the second and third quarters to break open a game that was tied after one period, 17-17.

Nicole Flennaugh had a game-high 21 points for the Golden Eagles, while Alyssa Fisher had 19 points and Sydney Bordonaro had 17. 

Madison Corder had 14 points to lead the Gators (0--6, 0-3 CCAA), while Taimane Lesa-Hardee had 13.

Jolene Robinson had eight points for the Golden Eagles, while Amiete Nyingifa and Yesenia Smith had seven points each.

Cal State LA shot 45.1 percent for the game (32-of-71) and made 8-of-17 from 3-point range (47.1 percent). The Golden Eagles also made 20-of-24 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot 32.9 percent (25-of-76), but made only 3-of-22 from 3-point range. Cal State LA had a 49-46 rebounding edge and committed 19 turnovers to 21 for the Gators.

Cal State LA trailed in the first quarter, 17-12, but evened it up after a 3-pointer by Bordonaro and a basket by Fisher to end the period.

Cal State LA then went on a 12-0 run to break a 19-19 tie and never looked back. Flennaugh hit two free throws to start the run, Bordonaro scored on a layup and a 3-pointer, Robinson made a layup, Jo Ana Adams hit a pair of free throws and Smith hit a free throws to make it 31-19. The Golden Eagles continued on their run and led 46-28 at halftime.

Cal State LA shot 60 percent in the third period and outscored the Gators, 33-17, to open up a 79-45 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Stanislaus State.
