LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team endured a tough fourth-quarter stretch Saturday that deprived them of a California Collegiate Athletic Association home victory.
The Golden Eagles surrendered 15 straight points over a five-minute stretch and fell to Sonoma State, 73-66, in University Gym. Cal State LA (4-9, 2-5 CCAA) held a four-point lead, 53-49, with eight minutes to go before Sonoma State (8-4, 4-3 CCAA) went on its game-wining run.
Sydney Bordonaro had a team-high 20 points and five assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Amiete Nyingifa had 11 points and five rebounds.
Kylie Kiech had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Seawolves, while Ugochi Anudokem had 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Rachael DiRegolo had nine points, nine rebounds and five blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Jo Ana Adams had eight points and four rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 39.1 percent for the game (25-of-64) and made 5-of-14 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-19 from the free-throw line. Sonoma State shot 36.2 percent for the game (21-of-58) and was 5-of-14 from 3-point range. The Seawolves were 26-of-32 from the free-throw line.
It was a tale of two drastically different quarters in the second half on Saturday for the Golden Eagles, who shot 64.3 percent in the third quarter (9-of-14) and just 23.5 percent (4-of-17) in the fourth period.Â
Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 43-35, and committed 11 turnovers to 14 for the Seawolves.
The Golden Eagles trailed, 19-12, after one quarter, but opened the second period with an 8-0 run that included six straight points from Nyingifa and a basket by
Mackenzie Barnes that put them ahead, 20-19. Sonoma State responded with an 11-0 run to take a 30-20 lead, but the Golden Eagles scored the final eight points of the period on a basket by
Yesenia Smith, two straight baskets by Adams and a layup by DiRegolo on an assist from
Alyssa Fisher to make it 30-28 at halftime.
DiRegolo scored the first four points of the third quarter to give the Golden Eagles a 32-30 lead and a three-point play by
Nicole Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 50-45 lead entering the fourth. A 3-pointer by Bordonaro put the Golden Eagles ahead, 53-49, with 8:34 to go, but Sonoma State scored the next 15 points and hit its free throws down the stretch to maintain its edge.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 2, in a home game against Chico State at 5:30 p.m.Â
