LOS ANGELES -- The holiday break seemed to do wonders for Cal State LA's women's basketball team.
The Golden Eagles returned from their hiatus refreshed and clicking on all cylinders in an 88-50 win over Chico State Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in University Gym. Cal State LA (5-9, 3-5 CCAA) snapped a four-game losing streak while also putting an end to a four-game winning streak by Chico State (8-5, 4-4 CCAA).
It was a record-breaking night for Cal State LA's
Sydney Bordonaro, who hit eight 3-pointers and eclipsed the old mark of seven held by Paige Melville in 2013 and Lacey Gibbons in 2012. Bordonaro was 8-of-13 from 3-point range and 10-of-17 overall as part of a season-high 30 points. She also had six rebounds and three assists.
Bordonaro was one of five Golden Eagles to reach double figures.
Mackenzie Barnes and
Alyssa Fisher had 16 points each, while
Nicole Flennaugh had 11 points and
Amiete Nyingifa had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Cal State LA shot 28-of-58 overall (48.3 percent) and hit a sizzling 14-of-24 from 3-point range (58.3 percent). The 14 successful 3-pointers tied the program's single-game record originally set against Point Loma in 2012.
The Golden Eagles were also active defensively and limited the Wildcats to just 24.3 percent shooting (17-of-70). The Wildcats were just 8-of-30 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 18-of-24 from the free-throw line, while Chico State was just 8-of-18. Cal State LA had a 50-38 rebounding edge and committed 21 turnovers to 17 for the Wildcats.
The Golden Eagles never trailed by more than two points and took a 21-19 lead after one quarter. Cal State LA shot 56.3 percent in the second quarter (9-of-16, including all three of their 3-point attempts) to open up a 45-31 lead by halftime.
The Golden Eagles then hit 5-of-10 from 3-point range while outscoring the Wildcats, 24-15, to take a 69-46 lead into the final period. The Golden Eagles then outscored the Wildcats, 19-4, over the final 10 minutes to complete the win.
Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at Cal Poly Pomona next Thursday.
