Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Come Up Short Against Toros

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had a promising start Thursday night in the Torodome, but the Golden Eagles couldn't maintain it.

The Golden Eagles led after one quarter, but Cal State Dominguez Hills used game-breaking runs of 10-0 in the second quarter and 13-0 in the third period and went on to a 75-58 California Collegiate Athletic Association win. Cal State LA (4-8, 2-4 CCAA) had a two-game conference winning streak snapped.

Sydney Bordonaro had 17 points and two assists for the Golden Eagles, while Rachael DiRegolo had 11 points, six rebounds and five blocks.

Ariana Harper had 28 points to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-7, 2-4 CCAA).

Mackenzie Barnes and Nicole Flennaugh had nine points each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA led for most of the first quarter and could have had an even bigger lead if not for an officiating miscue in the final minute of the period. A basket by Alyssa Fisher gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game at 12-7 and a 3-pointer by Bordonaro broke a 12-12 tie. Bordonaro was then fouled with 30 seconds left in the period and should have been awarded two free throws as the Toros picked up their fifth team foul. The officials didn't realize their mistake until the quarter ended and were unable to correct it.

The Toros used a 10-0 run in the second period to open up a 31-18 lead, but an offensive rebound basket by Barnes, a layup by DiRegolo on an assist from Jolene Robinson and a 3-pointer by Bordonaro cut the margin to 35-31 at halftime.

A basket by Bordonaro made it 37-35, but the Toros went on a 13-0 run to open up a 50-35 lead and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Sonoma State at 1 p.m.
