Golden Eagles Fall Short To Falcons In Seattle

SEATTLE -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team was in position for a non-conference road victory, but could not overcome a tough final period.

The Golden Eagles trailed by just one point after three quarters, but were outscored, 31-19, in the final 12 minutes of an 80-67 loss to Seattle Pacific Monday night. Cal State LA (4-7) dropped both games of its two-game road trip against Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams.

Sydney Bordonaro had a team-high 18 points for the Golden Eagles, while Alyssa Fisher added 10.

Hailee Bennett had 29 points to lead Seattle Pacific (1-8), while Ashlynn Burgess had 15.

Nicole Flennaugh scored nine points, while Mackenzie Barnes had eight.

Cal State LA shot just 31.4 percent for the game (22-of-70) and made 9-of-31 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-21 from the free-throw line. Seattle Pacific shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) and made 7-of-16 from 3-point range. The Falcons were 19-of-22 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 49-30, but committed only eight turnovers while forcing 20.

Cal State LA led by as many as four points twice in the second quarter. A 3-pointer by Yesenia Smith gave the Golden Eagles a 17-13 lead and a jumper by Smith made it 23-19. A basket by Barnes put the Golden Eagles ahead, 25-23 and a basket by Jolene Robinson tied it at 27-27. A late 3-pointer gave the Falcons a 30-27 halftime lead.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Flennaugh and Bordonaro gave the Golden Eagles a 48-47 lead late in the third quarter and they trailed by just one point, 49-48, entering the fourth quarter.

Two free throws by Barnes kept it at 53-50, but the Falcons went on a game-deciding 10-0 run to take a 63-50 lead and the Golden Eagles were unable to get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to California Collegiate Athletic Association action on Thursday with a road game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
