Golden Eagles Drop A Tough One To 'Jacks

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team was in position for its first California Collegiate Athletic Association victory of the season, but Humboldt State had a different ending in mind.

The Golden Eagles got a game-tying 3-pointer from Sydney Bordonaro in the final 90 seconds, but Humboldt State got the game-winner with 15 seconds left of a 72-70 victory in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State LA (2-5, 0-3 CCAA) led by as many as nine points in the first quarter, but Humboldt State (4-1, 2-0 CCAA) closed the gap to just two points by halftime and to one point entering the final period.

Bordonaro had a game-high 24 points for the Golden Eagles, while Nicole Flennaugh had a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double. Mackenzie Barnes had 12 points.

Alexia Thrower had 23 points and 15 rebounds for Humboldt State, while Tyra Turner had 14 points and 10 assists.

Alyssa Fisher and Amiete Nyingifa had five points each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA got off to a fast start and opened up a 20-11 lead after one quarter. A pair of 3-pointers by Flennaugh and two free throws by Bordonaro gave the Golden Eagles a quick 12-4 lead and a free throw by Fisher gave the Golden Eagles the nine-point edge after one quarter.

A 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 34-28 lead, but Humboldt State was able to close to within 34-32 at halftime.

A layup by Barnes gave the Golden Eagles a 53-52 lead after three quarters and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh to open the fourth quarter gave the Golden Eagles a 56-52 edge.

A basket by Flennaugh tied it at 64-64 and a 3-pointer by Bordonaro tied it for a final time at 70-70. Humboldt State then won it with its late layup.

Cal State LA will return to action with an exhibition game at Pepperdine on Friday at 1 p.m.
