BURNABY, B.C. -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team beat the buzzer Sunday at Simon Fraser and had an exciting finish to its two-game road trip.
Nicole Flennaugh hit a jumper in the final second to lift the Golden Eagles to a 78-77 win over Simon Fraser in a non-conference game. Cal State LA (2-3) and Simon Fraser (3-5) split games over a three-day span.
Sydney Bordonaro had a game-high 20 points for the Golden Eagles, who found a good offensive flow over the last three quarters after trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half. Flennaugh and
Yesenia Smith scored 13 points each and
Alyssa Fisher had 10 points.
Jo Ana Adams had 10 points and
Mackenzie Barnes had eight points and a key steal late in the game.
The Golden Eagles shot 43.8 percent for the game (28-of-64) for the game, while Simon Fraser shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54). The Golden Eagles were an efficient 8-of-15 from 3-point range (53.3 percent), while Simon Fraser was 8-of-26. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-16 from the free-throw line, while Simon Fraser was 23-of-34. Simon Fraser had a 40-34 rebounding edge, while the Golden Eagles committed 17 turnovers and forced 20.
The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start and trailed 20-9 after one quarter and 35-21 with just 3:21 remaining in the second quarter. Cal State LA trailed 40-29 at halftime, before exploding for 32 points in the third quarter to take a five-point edge into the final quarter.
The Golden Eagles pulled even at 48-48 in the third period and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh put them ahead, 51-50. A 3-pointer by Bordonaro made it 57-52 and a pair of free throws by Smith gave the Golden Eagles a 61-56 lead heading into the final period.
A layup by Adams gave the Golden Eagles a 63-58 lead with 9:11 to go, but Simon Fraser battled back to take a 66-65 lead before a 3-pointer by Bordonaro put the Golden Eagles back ahead, 68-66.
A steal by Barnes led to a pair of go-ahead free throws by Fisher that made it 76-75 with seven seconds left, but a pair of free throws gave Simon Fraser the lead with three seconds to go.
That was enough time for the Golden Eagles to advance the ball to the frontcourt and Flennaugh hit the game-winner before the final buzzer.
Cal State LA will open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Thursday at Cal State East Bay.
