LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team bounced back nicely from its first conference loss of the season.
The Golden Eagles completed a big rally in the opening set and then completed a three-set sweep of UC San Diego, 25-23, 25-13, 25-21 Tuesday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in University Gym. Cal State LA (9-5, 5-1 CCAA) won for the seventh time in its last eight matches and recorded its second straight sweep at home.
The Golden Eagles scored the final six points of the first set to take the lead and had big leads in the second and third frames. UC San Diego, though, rallied from an 18-11 deficit in the third set to tie it at 20-20, but the Golden Eagles regrouped and scored the next three points and went on to secure the win.
Alejandra Negron had 10 kills and eight digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Daisy Crenshaw had eight kills and four blocks.
Mickayla Sherman and
Julia Azevedo had six kills and two blocks each.
Gina Cortesi had seven kills and six digs for UC San Diego (10-5, 4-3 CCAA).
Shea McGovern had 18 set assists and three digs, while
Laisa Maeda had 12 assists and one service ace.
Cal State LA had a 40-29 edge in kills and hit at a .258 percentage to .076 for the Tritons. Cal State LA had a 6-1 advantage in service aces and a 9-7 edge in blocks.
The Golden Eagles trailed, 23-19, before closing out the opening set with six straight points. Kills by
Daisy Portillo, Crenshaw and Azevedo pulled Cal State LA to within 23-22 and a UC San Diego attack error tied it. A kill by Crenshaw and another UC San Diego error ended the set.
Cal State LA raced to a 20-9 lead in the second set and never looked back. A long serving run from
Karla Santos helped the Golden Eagles take the big lead.Â
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 16-10 lead in the third set after a kill by Sherman and took an 18-11 lead after a kill by
Shelby Grubbs, but the Tritons battled back and tied it at 20-20. Kills by Negron and Grubbs and a block from Portillo and Grubbs gave the Golden Eagles a 23-20 lead. A kill by Sherman got the Golden Eagles to match point and an ace by Grubbs ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5 p.m.
