CHICO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team had a pair of big comebacks on Saturday on its way to another California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles rallied from a first-set loss and a large third-set deficit to upend Chico State, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-30 on Saturday in Acker Gym. No. 24 Cal State LA (14-5, 10-1 CCAA) won its sixth straight match and won both matches this weekend after returning to the national top-25 poll.
Karla Santos had a match-high 19 kills and 13 digs while hitting at a .405 percentage to lead the Golden Eagles.
Mickayla Sherman had 13 kills and eight digs.
Daisy Crenshaw had eight kills and five blocks.
Kim Wright had 12 kills and seven blocks for Chico State (10-10, 6-6 CCAA).
Julia Azevedo had eight kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Shelby Grubbs had a team-high seven blocks.
Laisa Maeda had 25 set assists,
Shea McGovern had 15 set assists and
Jeshmarie Suarez had 11 digs and two aces.
Cal State LA had a 58-48 advantage in kills and outhit the Wildcats, .314 - .195. Cal State LA had a 12-9 edge in blocks and both teams had seven service aces each.
After dropping the opening set, Cal State LA took control in the second set and opened up a 20-12 lead following a block from Grubbs and Santos and another from Grubbs and
Alejandra Negron. A block by Crenshaw gave the Golden Eagles a 23-13 lead and kills by Santos accounted for the final two points of the set for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles fell behind, 15-7, in the third set, but battled back to tie it at 17-17 following a kill by Santos. Chico State then scored three straight points to take a 20-17 lead, but Cal State LA scored the next five points to take the lead. Kills by Negron, Crenshaw and Santos tied it and a service ace by
Jessica Kaeka gave the Golden Eagles a 21-20 lead. Another Santos kill made it 22-20 and the Golden Eagles led the rest of the way.
Cal State LA trailed 16-14 in the fourth set, but scored five straight points to take the lead. A service error, an attack error, an ace by Grubbs and an attack error completed the run. Chico State was able to close to within 21-20, but two straight attack errors, a block by Grubbs and Sherman and a kill by Sherman ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino.
