LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team extended the No. 1 team in the nation, but the Golden Eagles couldn't quite pull out a victory.
The Golden Eagles split the first two sets and had a set point to take the match to a fifth and deciding frame, but Cal State San Bernardino held on for a 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 26-24 win in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in University Gym. No. 24 Cal State LA (14-6, 10-2 CCAA) had a six-match winning streak snapped, while the No. 1 Coyotes (20-0, 12-0 CCAA) remained unbeaten.
Karla Santos had 14 kills and 15 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Mickayla Sherman had 13 kills and five digs.Â
Alexis Cardoza had a match-high 26 kills for Cal State San Bernardino, while Jalyn Hayes had five kills and 10 blocks.
Daisy Portillo had eight kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Daisy Crenshaw had six kills and six blocks.
Shea McGovern and
Laisa Maeda had 18 set assists each, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had 19 digs and three service aces.
Cal State San Bernardino had a 59-52 edge in kills and hit at a .295 percentage to .204 for Cal State LA. The Coyotes also had a 13-8 advantage in blocks. Cal State LA had a 9-2 edge in service aces with Suarez and Santos posting three each.Â
After dropping the first set, the Golden Eagles evened things in the second. A service ace from
Julia Azevedo and a kill by Sherman gave the Golden Eagles a 20-16 lead and back-to-back kills from Portillo got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-20. A kill by Santos eventually ended the set.
The Golden Eagles started slowly in the third set and never recovered. Back-to-back kills from Santos and Crenshaw got the Golden Eagles to within 22-20, but the Coyotes rattled off three straight points to close out the set.
Cal State LA trailed for most of the fourth set, but kept it close throughout and pulled into a 22-22 tie after an ace by Suarez. A kill by Sherman and an attack error got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-23, but a service error tied it and the Coyotes scored the next two points to claim the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a match against Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m.
