LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team survived a major challenge from Cal Poly Pomona in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles, one night after a draining battle against No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino, needed a big rally in the fifth set to outlast the Broncos, 25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 23-25, 17-15 in University Gym. Cal State LA (15-6, 11-2 CCAA), ranked 24th in the nation, roared back from a 10-6 deficit in the final set and finally wrapped up the win on its third match point.
Karla Santos had 17 kills and 19 digs, while
Alejandra Negron had 14 kills and 10 digs.
Julia Azevedo had 13 kills and
Daisy Portillo had 11 kills and seven blocks.Â
Jazminn Parrish had 16 kills to lead Cal Poly Pomona (6-15, 4-10 CCAA), while Daisy Duke had 14 kills.
Daisy Crenshaw had nine kills and six blocks, while
Victoria Duarte had eight blocks for the Golden Eagles.
Jeshmarie Suarez had 19 digs.
Cal State LA had a 69-48 edge in kills and hit at a .187 percentage to .144 for Cal Poly Pomona. Both teams had 14 blocks. The Golden Eagles had a 10-5 edge in service aces, led by Santos with five.
After taking the first two sets, the Golden Eagles almost saw the match slip away. The Broncos took the next two sets to even the match and jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the fifth. An attack error, a kill by Santos, another attack error and a kill by Azevedo evened the score at 10-10. A block by Duarte and Negron gave the Golden Eagles their first match point at 14-13. A kill by Negron gave them their second at 15-14. After Cal Poly Pomona tied it at 15-15, kills by Azevedo and Santos gave the Golden Eagles the win.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a match at UC San Diego.
