LA JOLLA -- A short-handed Cal State LA women's volleyball team came up short Friday to a high-flying UC San Diego team in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in RIMAC Arena.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early in all three sets and never recovered in a 25-19, 25-17, 25-17 loss to the Tritons on Friday. No. 24 Cal State LA (15-7, 11-3 CCAA) split conference matches with UC San Diego (16-7, 10-5 CCAA) this season.
The Golden Eagles still hold onto second place in the CCAA South Division with three matches remaining. Cal State LA and UC San Diego have both clinched spots in the CCAA Tournament.
Julia Azevedo had eight kills and five digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Karla Santos had seven kills and 10 digs.
Jeshmarie Suarez had a team-high 12 digs.Â
Trinity Castaneda had 16 kills for the Tritons, while Jessica Rieble had nine kills and eight blocks.
Shea McGovern had 19 assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Mia Ardila had five.
UC San Diego had a 43-30 edge in kills and a 10-2 advantage in blocks. Cal State LA hit at just a .102 percentage to .307 for the Tritons.
The Golden Eagles did not record a service ace and committed eight service errors.
The Golden Eagles' only lead of the match came after a Santos kill made it 6-5 in the opening frame. UC San Diego, though, scored the next six points and led the rest of the way.
Cal State LA fell into early deficits in each of the final two sets. The Golden Eagles trailed, 11-5, in the second set and 8-2 in the third set and were unable to rally.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Cal State San Marcos.
