SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team had a nice bounce back effort Saturday in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start and never let up in a 25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 25-18 win over Cal State San Marcos Saturday in The Sports Center. No. 24 Cal State LA (16-7, 12-3 CCAA) completed a regular-season sweep of the Cougars (15-9, 9-6 CCAA).
Alejandra Negron had a career-high 22 kills and 15 digs to lead the Golden Eagles to the win.
Victoria Duarte added 10 kills and had a .476 hitting percentage.
Karla Santos had nine kills, 11 digs and three service aces.
Maddy Newcombe had a team-high 12 digs for Cal State San Marcos.
Cal State LA had a 57-44 advantage in kills and hit at a .199 percentage to .141 for the Cougars. The Golden Eagles also had a 10-7 edge in blocks, while both teams recorded seven aces.
Julia Azevedo had six kills and three blocks, while
Shelby Grubbs had four kills and six blocks.
Shea McGovern had 45 set assists.
The Golden Eagles opened up big leads in the first two sets and then held on to close them out. Cal State LA led 16-8 after a kill by Santos and took a 22-15 lead after a kill by Negron. Cal State San Marcos, though, closed to within 23-22 before a kill by Duarte and a bad set ended the set.
A similar scenario played out in the second set. Cal State LA had a 22-16 lead after an ace by
Jessica Kaeka, only to see the Cougars claw back to within 23-22. A kill by Negron got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-22 and one point later a kill by Santos gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
After dropping the third set, Cal State LA hit .419 in the fourth set to close out the match.Â
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against San Francisco State.
