Golden Eagles Outlast Gators In Five Sets

LOS ANGELES -- It was a case of better late than never for Cal State LA's volleyball team Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match against San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles dropped the first two sets before bouncing back for a 20-25, 14-25, 25-21, 27-25, 15-10 over the Gators in University Gym. Cal State LA (17-7, 13-3 CCAA) clinched the No. 2 seed for next week's CCAA Tournament with the hard-fought win over San Francisco State (16-9, 9-7 CCAA).

Mickayla Sherman led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 13 kills, while Karla Santos had 12 kills and 14 digs and Julia Azevedo had 12 kills.

Drew Morris had 17 kills and 15 digs for the Gators, while Bailey Johnson had 15 kills.

Shea McGovern had 25 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while Daisy Crenshaw had eight kills and two blocks. Jeshmarie Suarez had a team-high 17 digs.

Cal State LA had a slim 55-51 advantage in kills and hit at a .173 percentage to .239 for San Francisco State. The Gators had a 13-7 edge in blocks.

Both teams struggled at the service line. Cal State LA had seven aces and 16 errors, while San Francisco State had seven aces and 19 errors.

After losing the first two sets, Cal State LA slowly began to climb back into the match in the third set. The Golden Eagles had a 24-18 lead, saw it sliced to 24-21 and closed out the set on a kill by Negron.

The fourth set was tight throughout and Cal State LA needed three set points before getting kills from Azevedo and Sherman to prevail, 27-25.

Cal State LA took control early in the final set, expanding an 5-4 lead to 8-4 after a kill by Daisy Portillo, an ace by Sherman and a kill by Crenshaw. San Francisco State got to within 13-10, but a kill by Crenshaw and an attack error ended the match.

Cal State LA will conclude the regular season on Saturday against Cal State East Bay and will honor four seniors - Jessica Kaeka, Azevedo, Sherman and Portillo in pre-match ceremonies.
