LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team ended the regular season with another California Collegiate Athletic Association victory, but it wasn't easy.
The Golden Eagles, one night after rallying for a five-set win over San Francisco State, beat Cal State East Bay in three tight sets, 25-22, 27-25, 25-23 Saturday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (18-7, 14-3 CCAA) finished second in the CCAAÂ and will open play in the CCAA Tournament on Thursday as the No. 2 seed against No. 7 seed San Francisco State at 2:30 p.m. in San Bernardino.
Julia Azevedo had 13 kills and four digs to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Karla Santos had 10 kills and 12 digs.Â
Steena Hubbard had eight kills to lead Cal State East Bay (7-19, 6-12 CCAA).
Daisy Portillo had seven kills and hit at a .538 percentage for the Golden Eagles, while
Alejandra Negron had seven kills and seven digs and hit at a .429 clip.
Cal State LA had a 49-37 edge in kills and a 7-4 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles hit at a .310 percentage, while the Pioneers hit at a .235 clip.
There were 40 tie scores and 14 lead changes in three extremely close sets.
The Golden Eagles broke an 18-18 tie in the opening set after a kill by Portillo and a block by
Shelby Grubbs and Portillo and eventually got to set point at 24-20 after a kill by Santos. The Pioneers staved off two set points before a service error ended the set.
The second set was the closest of the three. Cal State LA took a set point at 24-23 after a kill by Azevedo, but the Pioneers got a kill by Kara Green and an attack error to earn their own set point at 25-24. A kill by Negron tied it at 25-25, a kill by
Daisy Crenshaw gave the Golden Eagles a 26-25 lead and an ace by Negron ended the set.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as three points midway through the third set and Cal State East Bay led as late as 23-22. A block by Santos and
Victoria Duarte and a kill by Duarte got the Golden Eagles to match point and a block by Duarte ended the contest.
