Golden Eagles Advance With Another Five-Set Win

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team was at it again Thursday in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament at Cal State San Bernardino.

The No. 2 seed Golden Eagles rallied for a five-set win over No. 7 San Francisco State for the second time in six days to advance to the semifinals for the third straight year. Cal State LA (19-7) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to record a 18-25, 25-19, 26-28, 25-13, 15-12 win over the Gators in Coussoulis Arena.

Julia Azevedo had a match-high 15 kills and a .355 hitting percentage to lead the Golden Eagles, while Mickayla Sherman had 13 kills and three blocks. The Golden Eagles also got a big match from senior Daisy Portillo, who had 12 kills, including the final two of the match.

Drew Morris had 14 kills for San Francisco State (16-11).

Karla Santos had eight kills and a match-high 25 digs, while Jeshmarie Suarez had 17 digs. Shea McGovern had 28 set assists, while Alejandra Negron had 19 set assists and six digs.

Cal State LA had a 58-48 advantage in kills and hit at a .257 percentage to .148 for the Gators. The Golden Eagles also had a 12-3 advantage in blocks. Victoria Duarte led the way with seven. The Golden Eagles also had nine service aces, including three from Santos and two each from Daisy Crenshaw and Negron.

The Golden Eagles were able to bounce back after a tough loss in the third set. Cal State LA fought off three set points, twice on kills by Sherman, before the Gators finally prevailed, 28-26, to take a 2-1 lead.

Cal State LA roared out of the gates in the fourth set, building a quick 10-4 lead after a block by Duarte and Portillo and extending it to 16-7 after a Crenshaw kill. An ace by Negron made it 21-11 and the Golden Eagles finally closed out their best set of the match with a block by Duarte and Portillo.

Cal State LA trailed as late as 8-7 in the fifth set before kills by Azevedo and Santos, an attack error and a kill by Santos gave the Golden Eagles an 11-8 lead. An Azevedo kill made it 12-9, but the Gators made things tighter by closing to within 12-11 and 13-12 before back-to-back kills by Portillo gave Cal State LA the win.

Cal State LA will play Sonoma State in the first of two semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m.
