SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team has earned its way to a California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament final for the first time in program history after an impressive performance on Friday.
The Golden Eagles split the first two sets and then took control in a 25-20, 19-25, 25-14, 25-21 semifinal victory over Sonoma State at Cal State San Bernardino's Coussoulis Arena. Cal State LA (20-7) won its 20th match of the season and now has back-to-back 20-win seasons to its credit for the first time since 2008-09.
Karla Santos had 13 kills, six service aces and 12 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Mickayla Sherman had 11 kills and five digs and
Julia Azevedo had 10 kills and three blocks.
Kiana RIchardson and Bailey Palestini had 11 kills each for Sonoma State (18-10).
Daisy Crenshaw had nine kills and three blocks, while
Daisy Portillo had seven kills.
Shea McGovern had 26 set assists, while
Alejandra Negron had 19 and one service ace.
Cal State LA had a 55-37 advantage in kills and hit at a .258 clip to .192 for Sonoma State. Both teams had five blocks. Cal State LA had 12 service aces with 13 errors, while Sonoma State had four aces and seven errors.
After splitting the first two sets, the Golden Eagles took the lead with a dominating effort in the third set. After trailing 9-8, the Golden Eagles closed out the set with a 17-5 run to take a 2-1 lead. Kills by Portillo, Azevedo and Sherman erased the 9-8 deficit and, after taking an 18-14 lead, Santos served out the set with a strong serving run that included three aces.
The fourth set was close and tied for a final time at 17-17. Kills by Portillo and Sherman, an ace by
Jessica Kaeka an attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 21-17 lead and Cal State LA never looked back. Sonoma State closed to within 22-20, but back-to-back kills by Crenshaw got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-20. After the Seawolves saved one match point, a kill by Santos ended the contest.
Cal State LA will play in its first tournament final against No. 1 seed Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday at 7 p.m. Â
