SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team did something that no other team had done yet this season against unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Cal State San Bernardino, but the Golden Eagles couldn't quite pull off a victory.
The Golden Eagles had the California Collegiate Athletic Association champions on the ropes after winning the second and third sets, but the Coyotes rallied and pulled out a 25-17, 15-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-6 in the CCAAÂ Tournament championship match. Cal State LA (20-8) was making its first-ever appearance in a tournament final and was the first team this year to extend the Coyotes to a fifth set.
Karla Santos had 14 kills and 13 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Mickayla Sherman also had 14 kills and three blocks.
Alexis Cardoza had 17 kills for Cal State San Bernardino (27-0), while Stephanie Doak had 12 kills.
Cal State LA had a 53-50 edge in kills, but Cal State San Bernardino hit at a .295 clip to .163 for the Golden Eagles. The Coyotes had a big 17-4 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had six service aces, including four from Santos, while Cal State San Bernardino had three.
After dropping the first set, Cal State LA played some tremendous volleyball in the second and third sets to take the lead. The Golden Eagles held a 9-7 advantage in the second set before a strong serving run by Santos that included back-to-back service aces. Following a kill by
Daisy Portillo, the Golden Eagles had a 16-7 lead and never looked back. A kill by Portillo got the Golden Eagles to set point and an ace by Santos ended it.
Cal State LA then came up big to take the third set. Trailing 23-22, the Golden Eagles got kills from Sherman,
Alejandra Negron and Santos to take the set and grab a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles, though, were unable to carry any momentum into the fourth set. Cal State San Bernardino jumped out to a 7-0 lead and Cal State LA never recovered.
Helped by a pair of kills by
Daisy Crenshaw, the Golden Eagles held a 4-3 lead in the final set. Cal State San Bernardino, though, scored six straight points to take a 9-4 edge and, after a kill by Sherman made it 11-6, the Coyotes scored the final four points to wrap up the match.
Santos and Sherman were both named to the All-Tournament team.
Cal State LA, ranked third in the West Region in last week's NCAA poll, will find out its seeding for the NCAA Tournament on Monday.
