TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team came up big in the important moments Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles roared back from a 20-14 deficit to take a pivotal second set and held off a late Stanislaus State charge in the fourth set to record a 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 25-19 victory in Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (13-5, 9-1 CCAA) won its fifth straight match.
Julia Azevedo led a balanced offensive attack with 12 kills, while
Mickayla Sherman had 11 kills and two aces.
Karla Santos had nine kills, two block and 10 digs, while
Daisy Crenshaw had nine kills and nine blocks.
Sierra Adams had a match-high 15 kills for Stanislaus State (11-7, 6-5 CCAA).
Shea McGovern had 23 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Laisa Maeda had 17 assists and five digs.
Jeshmarie Suarez had nine digs.
Cal State LA had a 48-43 advantage in kills and outhit the Warriors, .160 - .098. Cal State LA had a 12-10 edge in blocks and an 8-2 advantage in service aces. The Golden Eagles, though, also had 17 service errors to just six for the Warriors.
Cal State LA trailed late in each of the first two sets, yet rallied in both to take a 2-0 lead. In the opening set, the Golden Eagles were down, 20-18, before a service error, an attack error and a block by Crenshaw put them ahead, 21-20 lead.
Alejandra Negron delivered an ace to make it 22-20 and another attack error made it 23-20. A Crenshaw kill got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-21 and a
Victoria Duarte kill ended the set at 25-22.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as much as 12-4 in the second set and were still down, 20-14, before storming back behind a strong serving run by Santos. An attack error started the run and three straight kills by Sherman made it 20-18. An attack error and a block by
Shelby Grubbs and Negron tied it at 20-20 and a pair of attack errors gave the Golden Eagles a 22-20 lead. Another attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 23-21 lead and back-to-back kills by Crenshaw gave the Golden Eagles the set.
After dropping the third set, Cal State LA jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the fourth set and never looked back. A block by Crenshaw and Negron gave the Golden Eagles a 23-15 lead and, after Stanislaus State scored three straight points, a kill by Santos got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-18. After the Warriors saved one match point, another kill from Santos ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Chico State.
