LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team found itself in a battle for the first time in awhile and the Golden Eagles emerged with another big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles had to rally from a 2-1 deficit to outlast Sonoma State, 29-31, 25-17, 24-26, 25-19, 15-9 on Saturday afternoon in University Gym. Cal State LA (12-5, 8-1 CCAA) won for the 10th time in its last 11 matches and won its second five-set decision in conference play. The Golden Eagles entered Saturday's match with three consecutive three-set sweeps, but they had their hands full with a determined Sonoma State squad.
Sonoma State (12-7, 4-5 CCAA) got an outstanding performance from Tate Battistini and almost pulled out a road victory. Battistini had a match-high 24 kills with a .302 hitting percentage, including nine in the opening set.
Cal State LA got the job done with a balanced attack that saw five Golden Eagles record at least 10 kills.
Julia Azevedo led the way with 15 kills and four blocks, while
Karla Santos had 13 kills and a match-high 18 digs and
Alejandra Negron had 13 kills, seven digs and three aces.
Mickayla Sherman had 11 kills and four blocks and
Daisy Crenshaw had 10 kills and five blocks.
Victoria Duarte also had five kills in seven attacks for a .714 hitting percentage.
Shea McGovern had 30 set assists and four digs, while
Laisa Maeda had 22 set assists and seven digs.
Cal State LA had a 70-53 advantage in kills and a 12-10 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles hit at a .290 percentage, while the Seawolves hit at .199. Cal State LA had 11 service aces and 15 errors, while Sonoma State had seven aces and 10 errors.
The first set set the tone for a competitive match. The Seawolves finally clinched the opening set, 31-29, on its eighth set point with kills from Battistini and Caiti Wiesner giving the Seawolves the lead.
Cal State LA jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the second set behind some outstanding serving from
Shelby Grubbs, who served for six points in the frame, including an ace. Cal State LA got to set point at 24-16 after a kill from Santos and evened the match after a kill from Azevedo.
The third set was close like the first and Sonoma State prevailed to take the lead. A kill by Negron and a block by Crenshaw and Azevedo saved two set points for the Golden Eagles and tied it at 24-24, but the Seawolves got a kill from Hannah Coe and an ace from Ashleigh Phelps to take it.
The fourth set was tied at 9-9, but the Golden Eagles opened up a 17-12 advantage after a kill by Santos, an ace by Suarez, a block by Azevedo and Crenshaw and a kill by Azevedo. A kill by Crenshaw made it 21-14 and a kill by Azevedo and a block by Azevedo and Duarte closed out the set and sent the match into a fifth frame.
Cal State LA fell behind, 5-2, and 7-5, before going on a match-deciding 7-0 run. A service error started the run and Santos served for six straight points. A block by Negron and Crenshaw tied it at 7-7, back-to-back kills from Crenshaw made it 9-7 and a kill by Sherman, an ace by Santos and an attack error gave the golden Eagles a 12-7 lead. Sonoma State got to within 13-9, but a kill by Negron and an attack error ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a match at Stanislaus State.
