LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team kept its winning streak in tact with a three-set decision over Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start and never looked back in a 25-14, 25-22, 25-20 victory over the Cougars in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in University Gym. Cal State LA (7-4, 3-0 CCAA) remains one of only two teams still unbeaten in conference play.
Cal State San Marcos (8-6, 2-3 CCAA) beat the Golden Eagles in University Gym late in the season last year, but was unable to repeat that effort on Tuesday.
Daisy Crenshaw had 11 kills and eight blocks to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Alejandra Negron had nine kills and a pair of aces.
Maddy Newcombe had seven kills and two aces to lead the Cougars.
Julia Azevedo had seven kills and five blocks and
Karla Santos had six kills and eight digs.
Shea McGovern had 19 set assists, while
Laisa Maeda had 13 assists and four digs.
Cal State LA had a 40-25 edge in kills and hit at a .229 percentage to just .011 for Cal State San Marcos. The Golden Eagles had an 11-7 edge in blocks and recorded six service aces to two for the Cougars. Negron led the way with two aces, while Azevedo,
Jeshmarie Suarez, McGovern and
Jessica Kaeka had one each. Suarez also had a match-high 14 digs.
The Golden Eagles ended the first set on an 11-3 run to take the early lead. Kills by Azevedo and
Shelby Grubbs and an ace by Azevedo started a 5-0 run that extended a 14-11 advantage to 19-11. A kill by Crenshaw, a kill by Negron and an attack error closed out the first set for the Golden Eagles.
The second set was close throughout and the Golden Eagles held a 22-21 lead before a kill by Negron and an ace by Negron got the Golden Eagles to set point. After the Cougars saved one set point, Santos ended the set with a kill on the next point.
Cal State San Marcos led as late as 17-16 in the third set, but a kill by
Mickayla Sherman, an attack error, an ace by McGovern and a block by Azevedo and Crenshaw gave the Golden Eagles a 20-17 lead. The Cougars pulled to within 20-19, but a kill by Crenshaw, solo blocks by Crenshaw and Azevedo and a block by Santos and Crenshaw got the Golden Eagles to match point. A kill by Santos ended the contest.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday at Cal Poly Pomona.
