POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team overcame a slow start and finished strongly in a four-set win over Cal Poly Pomona Friday in Kellogg Arena.
The Golden Eagles dropped the first set, but rebounded nicely to upend the Broncos, 22-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-18 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match. Cal State LA (8-4, 4-0 CCAA) improved to 3-0 against CCAA South Division competition.
Daisy Crenshaw had 13 kills and six blocks, while
Julia Azevedo had 13 kills and four blocks for the Golden Eagles.
Alejandra Negron had eight kills and eight digs, while
Karla Santos had seven kills and a match-high 20 digs.Â
Ally WIlder had 11 kills for Cal Poly Pomona (4-9, 2-4 CCAA).
Shea McGovern had 23 assists and two service aces, while
Laisa Maeda had 22 assists.
McGovern and Negron had big service runs during decisive points in the final two sets.
Cal State LA had a 52-36 edge in kills and outhit the Broncos, .282-.114. The Golden Eagles also had a 9-4 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had eight aces and 15 service errors, while Cal Poly Pomona had four aces and 11 errors.
After dropping the first set, the Golden Eagles stormed back to even the match with a strong showing in the second frame. A kill by Negron, a block by Azevedo and Crenshaw and a block by Crenshaw opened up a 13-5 lead. A Negron kill gave the Golden Eagles a 20-9 edge and Cal State LA quickly finished out the set.
Cal State LA trailed early in the third set, 8-4, but a kill by Santos, an ace by Santos, a kill by
Mickayla Sherman and a kill by
Shelby Grubbs tied it up. Kills by Crenshaw and Negron pushed the Golden Eagles ahead, 12-11, and set the stage for a strong serving run by McGovern, who had two aces, the second of which gave the Golden Eagles a 17-11 lead. Cal State LA led 23-18 before back-to-back kills by Crenshaw ended the set.
The third set was tied at 17-17, but Cal State LA rolled off seven straight points to take control. Negron had an ace during her strong service run and a kill by Crenshaw got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-17. Cal Poly Pomona saved one match point, but a kill by Azevedo gave the Golden Eagles the win.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday against No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino in San Bernardino. The Golden Eagles and Coyotes are the final two unbeaten teams in conference play.
